Eden Lake is released in Singapore in 2009. A couple (Steve and Jennifer) goes camping; unaware that their fates will soon be in the hands of a gang of cruel youths-of-today. The title suits this movie because "eden", gives the impression of a peaceful environment, but will eventually turn into a chaotic scenerio.
This movie portrays a communication process through the use of the Transactional Model .
Firstly, communicators of this model are the director (encoder) and the audience (decoders). James Watkin's (director) message to the audience was in the form of 2 questions. "How would normal people react towards violence inorder to survive?" and "How to control troubled youths of today?" Viewers had responded that those ill-bred teens (in the movie) should be killed, therefore, proving that communication is in play. Here is an example of a viewer's response.
Secondly, Watkin created a dark and sinister environment in his movie to further put his message through to his audience. He made the eerie deserted woods his main setting, added excellent sound effects when someone was tortured, showed the audience how despicable the teenagers were (through their actions), etc. Therefore, putting the viewers in the shoes of both the killers and/or victims--literally see what they see and feel what they feel. The scene below is the perfect example of the environment portrayed to the viewers by Watkin.
However, it is a real pity that this film never had a 3D version (unlike the brainless final destination 4 which had) because I am sure that it would have heightened the entire movie experience to another level.

Finally, this environment does exert both negative and positive influences on the audience. Positive influences: Some of the audiences, especially parents, will make sure that their children are well-disciplined and also ensure that they do not become abusive parents that the youngsters might model after.
Negative influences: Although, this movie is rated M-18, it might send out wrong messages to the teenagers who are applicable to watch this--That Murder Can Be Committed for One's Own Pleasure. Therefore, there is the possibility that potential killer(s) might be groomed in the process, hence, bringing the horrors from screen to life.
Likewise, this is Watkin's first production as a director, therefore, the audiences' critics will positively influence him to work harder in the areas that he is lacking in.

This movie, with all its twists and turns, will keep you at the edge of your seat , and I do highly recommend movie-goers to watch it. It is unlike the "you've seen one, you've seen them all" sort of gore movie because it mirrors reality. I guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
I rate it 3/5.

HI MARILYN!
ReplyDeleteGore attracts so many because the scenes that they show on the screen are not often seen in daily life. it is the scare and thrill that entices people to watch these movies. if the audience cover their eyes and scream from the scenes shown, the objective has been reached because fear has been evoked from them.
i am personally NOT a fan of gore movies. those gruesome scenes irks me. sometimes i wonder if they were there just for the sake of being there, to add that FLAVOUR into the movie.
ReplyDeletebut you are right, youngsters of my/our age (except me), loves that kind of sensation in the killing, crashing and smashing especially with blood splattering everywhere - the messier the better >.< i guess thats why i always drop out of movie dates with my buddies! :D
haha i think the scriptwriters have run out of brain juice for more creative ideas to "die".
ReplyDeleteI guessed the media did a great job in advertising which attracts audience to visit the cinema. Perhaps, people are getting more stressed over certain stuff that are happening around them so they need a channel to let loose it. Watching gory scenes might me one of them.
HI!
ReplyDeleteYes I agree that gore films will have effects on people's minds. Even though youngsters might just watch it now for a good scare, it might give introduce some 'new' ideas as well, creating potential criminals. We should never under-estimate the power of media.
Already there is a change in the mindset of audiences just by the very fact that they are patronizing such gory movies. I do not think people of the older generation would have paid money to see people getting cut up or hurt. But this obviously differs in our generation now.
Gore is becoming increasingly accessible, and that to me is the scariest part of all.
While the media should be acknowledged for discovering more ways of entertaining people, it would be best if their talents were used towards something healthier.
Comment on my blog too :) rlsy-communicates-at.blogspot.com
firstly. gory movies are gross. i don't even know why people wants to watch them! for pleasure i suppose, although i see none in shows like these! i myself had caught the first series of final destination movie out of curiosity. and boy, did i regret watching it! i had to pull my friend along with me (we caught it at home, from a hard-disk). i suppose the reason why such gory movies exists is the same as why violent video games exist.
ReplyDeletei guess it can be entertaining in a way, keeping the viewer on the edge of his/her seats. thrill, as one may say.
secondly. i think people who film gory movies are purely sadistic in nature. like.. the scenes in final destination, the way people die is disgusting and absurd. i mean, look at the film. everything is about death!
still, i guess exorcist is the most scary and gross film ever. not that i have watched it, but, yeah, sort of had a glimpse of its previews.
seriously sick!
Hello!
ReplyDeleteIt's such a typical horror (more of gruesome?) movie. But I do like the idea of the director exploring into the possibilities of ill-bred teens turning into sadistic killers. A very good idea, indeed.
In the case of educating as the objective seems a bit out of point. As you mentioned, it's M18 so most probably parents can't get their teengers who are under 18 to watch with them and provide feedbacks to their behaviors. Moreover, not many people will dare to watch horror (even if they did, they will hide behind their popcorns during the crucial scenes). Unlike us! Horror or gruesome genre movies are productions which people either hate them or love them.
Afterall, horror movies are used to stimulate our sensory systems and are for pure entertainment purposes. hope to see better horror genre productions soon! (Not many of them have given me much impression so far) :)
hi marilyn,
ReplyDeletei'm sorry i wont be of much help here.
haha. But, after reading your analysis, i felt that horror movies, esp gruesome horror movies are mentally unhealthy. Firstly, regardless of age, it scares you half to death, secondly, i dont see why a horror movie has to be as gruesome as such... Horror movies can be pure horror movies and enjoyable if they have like a plot behind it, but i dislike horror movies with blood and killings and what not.
It's just unhealthy to the mind. =(

ReplyDeleteI apologize for not making it clear in the blog. Regarding the bit on educating the youngsters and the rating of M-18, I was also refering to the youngsters of other countries which have this movie airing in the cinemas. For example, in the Denmark, 15-year-old teenagers are able to watch this movie.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree that the media can send out the wrong messages to the intended receiver. I remembered a case in Singapore in the 1990s where a young boy believed that he was able to fly if he were to open an umbrella and jumped out of the window. He did so after watching an episode of Batman in which Penguin, the villian of the show, opened his umbrella and landed safely at ground level. This boy plundged to his death.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree that the trailer of the movie is rather appealing. It portrays bits and pieces of the movie which tend to arouse curiousity.
