This film covers factors which influenced Abby's ultimate decision; Physical appearance, similarity and dissimilarities, competency, proximity, reciprocity and liking, and exchange.
ROUND 1 : Physical Appearance- Doc Winner!!Dr. Anderson is a hunk (handsome, clean-cut, well-built) who has the look of success shining on him. Mike, however, models after a cave-man (rusty-looking and gorilla-like). Based on first impressions, Abby was drawn to Anderson, therefore choosing to develop a romantic relationship with him instead of Mike. ROUND 2 : Similarity Vs Dissimilarities (early stage)- Doc Winner!!
Dr. Anderson and Abby are very refined people in terms of speech and behaviour. Mike is the exact opposite--he is vulgar, crude and embarrassing. Based on these, Abby saw Anderson as the perfect romantic partner, whereas, she saw Mike as an on/off friend.
ROUND 3: Competency- Draw...
Although both men are in different fields of profession, they have attained career success. Dr. Anderson is a successful surgeon. Mike has a small successful talk show, was invited to be on the local news and poached by CBS.
ROUND 4 : Proximity- Mike Wins!!!
Despite spending time with Anderson during dates, Abby spent even more time with Mike. The duo worked at the news station together, and Mike also coached her to impress Anderson (even followed on her dates). Mike and Abby got to understand each other better through constant interaction and fell for each other eventually.
ROUND 5 : Reciprocity and liking- Mike Wins!!!
Self-disclosure: Mike confessed to Abby why he became a playboy and had physical contact with her. In the hot air balloon, he told her he loved her for who she was and had accepted her control-freak flaw (commitment made). Similarly, Abby admitted that she had not slept with a guy in 11 months. However, Anderson was not willing to accept Abby's flaw when she told him about it in the hotel room, therefore, leading to their break-up (impact of physical appearance diminished over course of relationship and that the character of the person was more important).

ROUND 6: Exchange- Doc no fight, Mike Wins!!!
Abby would be able to have a firm relationship with Mike that is grounded by acceptance, love and respect (rewards). However, Mike would have to give up his title as a playboy (costs) to keep this relationship, which he did so willingly.

This movie is an excellent comedy on relationships, coupled with slightly crude sexual language. It is a joy to watch so JUST WATCH IT!! *smilez*

hello!
ReplyDeleteThis movie sounds exactly like the plot of the movie I'm doing for my Com Project! haha
I'm glad that the movie is given a twist at its ending with the girl picking the "less attractive" guy. It's more refreshing than the normal happyily-ever-after endings. But the thing I'm amazed is that Abby was attracted to Anederson as compared to Mike, who was a playboy. Shouldn't women have the tendency to be attracted to playboys in terms of appearance? Most of them tend to go for the "bad-boys" instead of the good, nerdy ones on first impression. So I don't get the point with Abby's decision based on appearnce alone. Maybe there were other reasons?
Hi Marily!
ReplyDeleteI love this show! Great analysis on the interpersonal relationships between Abbey and Mike. From this movie it is evident that physical appearances may take presidence in relationship formation, and competency as well since that was what attracted Abbey to the Doctor in the first place. (Doctor met all of her requirements) But ultimately it is what's inside that really sees a relationship through.
Please comment on my blog too ! :D

I really want to watch the movie now. Great analysis on it. The movie portrays quite clearly about interpersonal communication that took place. The coming together and the breaking up.

hmmm, i havent watched this movie yet, now i cant wait for the dvd to be out and grab it asap! haha.
ReplyDeleteI've not watched this show, but the short clip is very hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI realised that the reality is like this: If you're ugly, you're out of the game. But this movie shows the opposite. Because what matters most is the character that a person has. The outlook is just a facade that gives people false interpretations. Why go for a guy that looks handsome but can't give you the kind of feeling and security that you need?
OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS MOVIE! the short clip is only one of the hilarious takes on the movie.
ReplyDeletethe irony of this movie is that mike helps abby get the guy she desires but because of the help he has given her both of them falls in love with each other.
the misunderstanding that arose when abby's boyfriend (wrapped in only a towel) opened her hotel room door to mike. the dressing of abby's boyfriend caused mike to think that they were about to get intimate and caused him much pain in choosing to let her go.
their self disclosure at the end of the movie helped them resolve the wrong concept they have of each other and pulled them even closer to one another.
heart warming.

ReplyDeleteWell girl, in this case Action does not speak louder than Words. haha XD
Self disclosure helped to pull these two individuals together (even closer) simply because in a relationship, it would be best to speak your mind or forever hold your peace and suffer from it.

ReplyDeleteAbby was not attracted to Mike because she was already prejudiced against him when he added that men were only attracted to women who were like bimbos and sex toys. Due to her prejudice against him, Mike's image degraded in Abby's eyes and she thinks of him as ugly and nothing compared to Anderson who was like a hero in her eyes ( heroes are always more handsome as compared to the villains).
